    To note the report from the Dorset County Council’s  People and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting held on 9 January 2019

    Minutes:

    A report was submitted, a copy of which had been circulated to each member and a copy of which appears as Appendix ‘A’ to these Minutes in the Minute Book.

     

    The Museums Advisor for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole informed the Committee that Dorset County Council had withdrawn from the ten year Joint Management agreement as funding responsibility would transfer to the new Unitary Authority of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) in April 2019 as the Red House Museum is in that administrative area.

     

    A member raised concerns regarding the new BCP Council’s commitment to support the Red House Museum.

     

    RESOLVED that the report be noted.

    To receive a report from the Museum Manager

    Minutes:

    A report was submitted, a copy of which had been circulated to each member and a copy of which appears as Appendix ‘B’ to these Minutes in the Minute Book.

     

    The Museum Manager presented a report updating Members on the activities and events at the Museum and in addition the Committee were advised of the exhibitions which had been held over the last few months.

     

    The Committee were updated that interviews were taking place in the first week of February for the recruitment of a Museum Project Coordinator, and that refurbishment of the Courtyard Gallery had begun and works would be completed by March 2019 and formally opened in April 2019.

     

    Members were informed that there had been a rise of 33% in visitors to the Museum due to the hard work of the volunteers to develop the exhibitions.  The Museum Manager expressed thanks for their continued support.

     

    The Committee were advised that there would be a relaunch of Museum guided visits for schools in September 2019 as these had proved more popular that the self-guided tours.

     

    The Chairman thanked the Museum Manager for a very detailed report and expressed thanks to the volunteers and staff for the high standard of exhibition work.  

     

    RESOLVED that the report be noted.

    To receive a report from the Cultural Hampshire Trust.

    Minutes:

    A Report was submitted, a copy of which had been circulated to each Member and a copy of which appears as Appendix ‘C’ to these Minutes in the Minute book.

     

    The Museum Manager presented a report which gave an overview of the Museum’s Financial Report and budget figures.

     

    Members were advised that at point 3 –‘Venue Community/Social Impact project expenditure’, that the second line (Still Curious project – application in progress so no current expenditure against budget) was included in the report in error as £25,000 had been ring fenced for the Still Curious project and was included in appendix 1 of the year to date figures for Venue Community Social Impact expenditure.

     

    Members were informed that the ‘Work stream Overheads’ figure included such exhibitions as £5,000 for the Marvellous Machines project and £3,000 for the Rock on Saturday.  The Cultural Experience Manager’s salary was also included in this figure.

    To receive a report from the Dorset County Museums Advisory Service.

    Minutes:

    A report was submitted, a copy of which had been circulated to each member and a copy of which appears as Appendix ‘D’ to these Minutes in the Minute Book.

     

    The Museums Advisor for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole provided an overview to the Committee on the Dorset County Museum Advisory Service.

     

    Members noted the Phoenix Flies project work at Highcliffe Castle. A Member informed the Committee that Bournemouth Borough Council held items of furniture in their Mayor’s Parlour which belonged to Highcliffe Castle and requested that the Museum Advisor establish if these items could be returned to Highcliffe Castle.

     

    The Chairman expressed thanks to the three Council’s representative Councillors, Officers, volunteers and friends of the Red House Committee for all of their work and gave best wishes for the future of the Museum.

     

    The committee gave thanks for the excellent job undertaken by the Chairman of the Committee.
